Family therapy takes place when a family is struggling to resolve conflict or maladaptive behaviours. A therapist will usually gain as much insight as possible from all members of the family. Once the counsellor has an understanding of the family’s difficulties and the role each member plays within these problems he/she will propose a group meeting with as many members of that family as is possible.
Once all parties are present therapy will commence and everyone will have an opportunity to discuss the problem as they see it. This gives each family member the opportunity to see their difficulties from another perspective.
The therapist will assist the family with conflict resolution, highlight dysfunctional thoughts and behaviours with the aim of empowering each family member to make positive changes.
